Haarlem is one of the most beautiful cities in the Netherlands, at least, that’s what we think. The city has about 150,000 inhabitants and is located on the river Spaarne. The city has an attractive town with many monuments and sights including the Frans Hals Museum and the Teylers Museum. In addition, Haarlem is known for its wide variety of cafes, restaurants and shops in the main shopping streets. Did you know that Haarlem was elected in 2013 as best shopping city with the most varied shopping offers?! (Examination of CBS)
In the culture departement, there is plenty to do in Haarlem. For example, the city has a number of venues: Philharmonie, Toneelschuur, Patronaat and the City Theatre of Haarlem. All offer a high quality program in areas such as theater, dance, music and film. As mentioned Haarlem also has museums. The most famous are the Frans Hals Museum and the Teylers Museum. The 100th anniversary of the Frans Hals Museum was celebrated in 2013 with Frans Hals Year. The oldest museum in the Netherlands (1784) is also in Haarlem, the Teylers Museum. In 2011, this museum was nominated for the UNESCO World Heritage List. But there's more. Besides the mentioned museums and cultural venues, Haarlem offers a number of leading galleries each with its own style. The most famous in Haarlem are Nieuwe Vide, Vertical Horizon, Gallery 37 and the Vishal. We are convinced that Haarlem has something to offer for any art and culture lover.
After Maastricht, Haarlem has the most bars and restaurants in the Netherlands. Because of this, the city is known for its rich culinary life. Whether simple or exclusive, trendy coffee bars to cozy cafés, it can be found in Haarlem. The city even has its own annual culinary event: 'Culinary Haarlem’. During this event in August, several restaurants present themselves to the public on the marketplace in the center of town.
